Second Thursdays Opening Reception
6:30pm Thursday, September 9, 2010

NOT FRAGILE
by Kathryn TeBordo, Choreographer
Performed by Brandon Beston and Sarah Gladwin Camp
On view during the opening reception only.

“Now the relation of human nature to the human mind is this.” – Gertrude Stein

Two bodies, entwined on the floor, move and are moved through imagery of wrestling grapples and victories to illustrate the battles and reconciliations that happen within each of us as we navigate through life. Playing underneath the surface of this antagonistic imagery is a gentle, rhythmic, continuous push and pull between the two players. Calm comforting like a heart beat or like breathing, the action bubbles and bursts into tiny moments of dancing celebrating the strength and elasticity of the relationship between human beings and their bodies. NOT FRAGILE, in this iteration, is a three hour performance sculpture that invites you to consider relationships and dualities of all kinds as the ultimate grounds for play.

Since 2006, me +dancers +collaborators have been finding ways to harness a precision that can only be seen when everyone is dancing on a scale of centimeters. We have sought a careful calibration and an anthemic unison.

Well now. It’s time to get sloppy.

This month at Second Thursdays, we are going to throw out a Movement Machine that is meant to be a celebration of drunkenness, but one that also carries the sense of isolation drunkenness can bring. Made in collaboration with Laura Neuman.

Hope to see you there. (We won’t barf on you, I promise!)

Have you ever heard of ‘the empathetic body’? Several people tell me how they notice their own bodies twitching and jumping when they watch our micro movement dances. I know this happens in other cases, too. It’s your empathetic body response that makes you stamp and cheer at a STREB show, for instance. And leap out of your chair during a horror movie, you know?

This spring, Dr. Paul Grobstein of Bryn Mawr College is going to assist our research into mirror neurons, the neurobiological fact behind the phenomenon, and how they link us humans through action and observation, learning and language. This month, at the informal Second Thursdays series, come out and feel for yourself how micro movement choreography can jump from the stage into your own body.
